How to check your tires with a penny and a quarter:

  • Place a penny into the tread grooves with the face towards you and Lincoln's head down. If part of Abe's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 2/32 inches of depth remaining.
  • Place a quarter with its face towards you and Washington's head down into the tread. If part of George's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 4/32 inches of depth remaining.
  • Place a penny, tails towards you, into several tread grooves across the tire. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32 inches of depth remaining.

If snow-covered roads are a concern, you should consider replacing your tires when they reach approximately 6/32 inches of remaining tread depth to maintain good mobility. For drivers concerned with rainy conditions and wet road services, you should look into new tires when they reach 4/32 inches of depth. With 2/32 inches of remaining tread depth, resistance to hydroplaning in the rain at highway speeds is significantly reduced and traction in snow is virtually eliminated. Driving with so little tread is dangerous, and you should replace your tires as soon as you can. In addition, it's illegal in Massachusetts to have less than 2/32 inches of tread on your tires.
